From clip to GIF
Set where the GIF should start and end in the video (seconds or minutes:seconds), pick a frame rate and a width, and press Make GIF:
- 5 frames per second gives a small, choppy GIF for slides and docs; 10 is smooth enough for most reactions and demos; 15 is smoother and larger.
- Width 480 px suits chats and posts. Every frame of a GIF is a full picture, so wider and longer GIFs grow quickly; keep clips to a few seconds.
The GIF loops forever, like the ones on chats and social networks. The sound is left out, since GIFs have none. GIF stores 256 colours per frame, which is fine for screen recordings and animation and adds a little grain to film-like footage.
A GIF holds up to 300 frames here, which is 30 seconds at 10 frames per second. For a GIF made from photos instead, use the GIF maker.
Made on your device
Frames are decoded and the GIF is built by your browser. The video is never uploaded, and the GIF has no watermark.
How this works
In a Web Worker, Mediabunny reads the video and your browser's video decoder (WebCodecs) draws a frame every 1/fps seconds between start and end, at the chosen width. Each frame is reduced to the 256 colours that represent it best and written by the open-source gifenc encoder, with a delay matching the frame rate and a loop instruction so players repeat it forever.
Frequently asked
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 300 frames: 30 seconds at 10 frames per second, 20 at 15. Short clips make smaller files.
Is there a watermark?
No. The GIF contains only frames from your video.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The frames are decoded and the GIF is made by your browser on this device.
Why is my GIF so large?
Each frame is a full picture. Lower the width, the frame rate or the length to make it smaller.
