Why convert Excel to JSON
Developers, no-code tools and web apps load data as JSON. Converting a sheet turns each row into a record whose fields are the column headers, ready to paste into code or send to an API.
Excel is an Excel workbook (XLSX, XLS, or OpenDocument ODS), with sheets, formats and formulas; JSON is the data format of web APIs and apps, here a list of records.
What to expect
- Cell values are exported as shown (formulas become their results; colours, fonts and charts are not part of the data).
- Workbooks with several sheets: choose the first sheet or all of them, one file per sheet, together in a ZIP.
- Each row becomes an object keyed by the header row; empty cells become null and numbers stay numbers.
Your data stays on your device
Spreadsheets often hold customer lists, salaries or financial records. Here the conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded; you can convert up to five files at once.
How this works
The file is read in a Web Worker by SheetJS Community Edition, an open-source spreadsheet library that reads XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV and JSON. It builds a workbook in memory and writes it out as JSON: an array of objects, one per row, keyed by the header row. Results appear on the page and can be downloaded.
Frequently asked
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is converted by your browser on this device.
Are formulas kept?
Their results are. CSV and JSON hold values, not formulas.
Which files can I use?
XLSX, XLS, XLSM, ODS, CSV, TSV and JSON, up to five at a time.
