Why convert CSV to Excel
A CSV exported from a system opens in Excel as one long column, or with accents broken, when the separator or encoding doesn't match your computer's settings. Converting to XLSX gives a real spreadsheet with proper columns that opens the same everywhere.
CSV is plain text with one row per line and values separated by commas or semicolons; Excel is an Excel workbook (XLSX, XLS, or OpenDocument ODS), with sheets, formats and formulas.
What to expect
- The separator (comma, semicolon or tab) is detected from the first line, so Brazilian and European CSVs with semicolons work too.
- Numbers follow the file's own convention: in semicolon files 1.250,50 becomes the number 1250.5, in comma files 1,250.50 does. Codes with a leading zero (postcodes, phone numbers) stay text.
Your data stays on your device
Spreadsheets often hold customer lists, salaries or financial records. Here the conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded; you can convert up to five files at once.
How this works
The file is read in a Web Worker by SheetJS Community Edition, an open-source spreadsheet library that reads XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV and JSON. It builds a workbook in memory and writes it out as Excel: an Office Open XML workbook with one sheet per source sheet, compressed. Results appear on the page and can be downloaded.
