Miles and feet
The international mile is exactly 1,760 yards, or 1,609.344 meters, under the 1959 yard and pound agreement. Road distances and speed limits in the United States and United Kingdom use miles.
The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, a third of a yard, and is divided into 12 inches. Height in the US and UK, aircraft altitude worldwide, and room and property sizes in the US are given in feet.
Worked example
Convert 0.25 mi: 0.25 × 5,280 = 1,320, so 0.25 miles is 1,320 feet. Likewise 0.1 mi = 528 ft.
Estimating in your head
Multiply by 5,300 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0.4%. For 0.25 mi that gives 1,330 ft, against 1,320 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert feet to miles, divide by 5,280 (or multiply by 0.000189393939394). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
ft = mi × 5,280
1 mi = 1,609.344 m and 1 ft = 0.3048 m, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 5,280 exactly. Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many feet are in a mile?
1 mile = 5,280 feet, exactly. The value follows from the unit definitions, so it never changes.
How do I convert miles to feet?
Multiply by 5,280. For example, 0.1 mi × 5,280 = 528 ft.
What is 0.5 mi in feet?
0.5 mi = 2,640 ft. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
