Feet and meters
The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, a third of a yard, and is divided into 12 inches. Height in the US and UK, aircraft altitude worldwide, and room and property sizes in the US are given in feet.
The meter is the SI base unit of length, defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. Heights, room dimensions, fabric and sports tracks are measured in meters in most of the world.
Worked example
Convert 6 ft: 6 × 0.3048 = 1.8288, so 6 feet is 1.8288 meters. Likewise 2 ft = 0.6096 m.
Estimating in your head
Divide by 3.3 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0.6%. For 6 ft that gives 1.82 m, against 1.8288 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert meters to feet, divide by 0.3048 (or multiply by 3.28083989501). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
m = ft × 0.3048
1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 m = 1 m, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.3048 exactly. Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many meters are in a foot?
1 foot = 0.3048 meters, exactly. The value follows from the unit definitions, so it never changes.
How do I convert feet to meters?
Multiply by 0.3048. For example, 2 ft × 0.3048 = 0.6096 m.
What is 10 ft in meters?
10 ft = 3.048 m. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
