Inches and feet
The inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters, one twelfth of a foot. Screen diagonals, wheel and tire sizes, pipe threads, and most US measurements of small objects use inches.
The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, a third of a yard, and is divided into 12 inches. Height in the US and UK, aircraft altitude worldwide, and room and property sizes in the US are given in feet.
Worked example
Convert 70 in: 70 × 0.08333333333 = 5.833333333, so 70 inches is 5.833333333 feet. Likewise 20 in = 1.666666667 ft.
Estimating in your head
Divide by 12 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0%. For 70 in that gives 5.83 ft, against 5.83333 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert feet to inches, divide by 0.08333333333 (or multiply by 12). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
ft = in × 0.08333333333
1 in = 0.0254 m and 1 ft = 0.3048 m, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.08333333333 (rounded here; the page uses the full value). Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many feet are in a inch?
1 inch = 0.08333333333 feet. The factor is exact by definition but has endless decimals, so it is shown rounded; the page uses the full value.
How do I convert inches to feet?
Multiply by 0.08333333333. For example, 20 in × 0.08333333333 = 1.666666667 ft.
What is 100 in in feet?
100 in = 8.333333333 ft. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
