Feet and miles
The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, a third of a yard, and is divided into 12 inches. Height in the US and UK, aircraft altitude worldwide, and room and property sizes in the US are given in feet.
The international mile is exactly 1,760 yards, or 1,609.344 meters, under the 1959 yard and pound agreement. Road distances and speed limits in the United States and United Kingdom use miles.
Worked example
Convert 10,000 ft: 10,000 × 0.0001893939394 = 1.893939394, so 10,000 feet is 1.893939394 miles. Likewise 20,000 ft = 3.787878788 mi.
Estimating in your head
Divide by 5,300 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0.4%. For 10,000 ft that gives 1.89 mi, against 1.89394 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert miles to feet, divide by 0.0001893939394 (or multiply by 5,280). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
mi = ft × 0.0001893939394
1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 mi = 1,609.344 m, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.0001893939394 (rounded here; the page uses the full value). Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many miles are in a foot?
1 foot = 0.0001893939394 miles. The factor is exact by definition but has endless decimals, so it is shown rounded; the page uses the full value.
How do I convert feet to miles?
Multiply by 0.0001893939394. For example, 20,000 ft × 0.0001893939394 = 3.787878788 mi.
What is 100,000 ft in miles?
100,000 ft = 18.93939394 mi. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
