Square meters and square feet

The square meter is the SI unit of area, a square 1 m on each side. Apartment and house sizes, flooring, paint coverage and rents are quoted per square meter in most countries.

A square foot is a square 1 foot on each side: exactly 0.09290304 square meters, or 144 square inches. Home sizes, rents, flooring and office space in the US and Canada are quoted in square feet.

Worked example

Convert 80 m²: 80 × 10.76391042 = 861.1128333, so 80 square meters is 861.1128333 square feet. Likewise 20 m² = 215.2782083 ft².

Estimating in your head

Multiply by 11 for a quick figure; it is off by about 2.2%. For 80 m² that gives 880 ft², against 861.113 exactly.
