Square feet and square meters
A square foot is a square 1 foot on each side: exactly 0.09290304 square meters, or 144 square inches. Home sizes, rents, flooring and office space in the US and Canada are quoted in square feet.
The square meter is the SI unit of area, a square 1 m on each side. Apartment and house sizes, flooring, paint coverage and rents are quoted per square meter in most countries.
Worked example
Convert 1,500 ft²: 1,500 × 0.09290304 = 139.35456, so 1,500 square feet is 139.35456 square meters. Likewise 1,000 ft² = 92.90304 m².
Estimating in your head
Divide by 11 for a quick figure; it is off by about 2.2%. For 1,500 ft² that gives 136 m², against 139.355 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert square meters to square feet, divide by 0.09290304 (or multiply by 10.7639104167). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
m² = ft² × 0.09290304
1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² and 1 m² = 1 m², both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.09290304 exactly. Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many square meters are in a square foot?
1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters, exactly. The value follows from the unit definitions, so it never changes.
