Why MOV videos often need to be MP4

iPhones, Macs and many cameras save video as MOV, Apple's QuickTime format. Windows apps, Android phones, some TVs, video editors and upload forms expect MP4. In most cases the video inside is exactly the same kind (H.264 or HEVC with AAC sound); only the wrapping differs. So this converter doesn't re-encode anything: it copies the video and sound into an MP4 container, which takes seconds even for long clips and changes neither quality nor size.

When it can't copy

Some professional cameras record ProRes video or uncompressed PCM sound, which MP4 can't hold as they are. Those tracks are listed after the conversion instead of being silently changed. Note that HEVC (H.265) videos from recent iPhones are copied as HEVC; if an older device can't play the result, use the Video compressor, which re-encodes to H.264.

Private, no limits

The conversion runs in your browser, reading the video in slices, so even multi-gigabyte files work and nothing is uploaded.

How this works

The file is read in slices in a Web Worker by Mediabunny, which separates the video and audio tracks and writes every packet unchanged into an MP4 file. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded: a track that MP4 can't contain is left out and named on the page. The result is written to the browser's private file storage as it is produced, so large videos don't need to fit in memory, then offered for download.

Frequently asked

Does it lose quality?

No. The video and sound are copied bit for bit into the new container.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is converted by your browser on this device; there's no size limit beyond your free disk space.

Why won't my MP4 play on an old device?

Recent iPhones record HEVC (H.265), which is copied as it is. Older devices need H.264; the Video compressor re-encodes to H.264.

Are there limits?

No account and no daily limit. Very long videos just need free disk space for the result.
