Meters and yards
The meter is the SI base unit of length, defined since 1983 as the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. Heights, room dimensions, fabric and sports tracks are measured in meters in most of the world.
The international yard is exactly 0.9144 meters and equals 3 feet. American football fields, golf distances, fabric sold by length and some UK road signs use yards.
Worked example
Convert 100 m: 100 × 1.093613298 = 109.3613298, so 100 meters is 109.3613298 yards. Likewise 200 m = 218.7226597 yd.
Estimating in your head
Multiply by 1.1 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0.6%. For 100 m that gives 110 yd, against 109.361 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert yards to meters, divide by 1.093613298 (or multiply by 0.9144). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
yd = m × 1.093613298
1 m = 1 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 1.093613298 (rounded here; the page uses the full value). Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many yards are in a meter?
1 meter = 1.093613298 yards. The factor is exact by definition but has endless decimals, so it is shown rounded; the page uses the full value.
How do I convert meters to yards?
Multiply by 1.093613298. For example, 200 m × 1.093613298 = 218.7226597 yd.
What is 1,000 m in yards?
1,000 m = 1,093.613298 yd. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
