Kilograms-force and newtons
A kilogram-force is the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity: exactly 9.80665 newtons. Older engineering specs, torque wrenches and some scales use kgf.
The newton is the SI unit of force: the force that accelerates one kilogram at one meter per second squared. Physics, engineering, load ratings and climbing gear (in kN) use newtons.
Worked example
Convert 20 kgf: 20 × 9.80665 = 196.133, so 20 kilograms-force is 196.133 newtons. Likewise 50 kgf = 490.3325 N.
Estimating in your head
Multiply by 9.8 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0.1%. For 20 kgf that gives 196 N, against 196.133 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert newtons to kilograms-force, divide by 9.80665 (or multiply by 0.101971621298).
How this works
N = kgf × 9.80665
1 kgf = 9.80665 N and 1 N = 1 N, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 9.80665 exactly. Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many newtons are in a kilogram-force?
1 kilogram-force = 9.80665 newtons, exactly. The value follows from the unit definitions, so it never changes.
How do I convert kilograms-force to newtons?
Multiply by 9.80665. For example, 50 kgf × 9.80665 = 490.3325 N.
What is 100 kgf in newtons?
100 kgf = 980.665 N. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
