Milliliters and US cups
The milliliter is one thousandth of a liter, the same volume as one cubic centimeter. Medicine doses, cosmetics, small bottles and metric recipes are measured in milliliters.
The US customary cup is half a US pint: 8 US fluid ounces, exactly 236.5882365 milliliters. American recipes measure flour, sugar, milk and water in cups. US nutrition labels use a rounded legal cup of 240 mL.
Worked example
Convert 250 mL: 250 × 0.004226752838 = 1.056688209, so 250 milliliters is 1.056688209 US cups. Likewise 100 mL = 0.4226752838 cup.
Estimating in your head
Divide by 240 for a quick figure; it is off by about 1.4%. For 250 mL that gives 1.04 cup, against 1.05669 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert US cups to milliliters, divide by 0.004226752838 (or multiply by 236.5882365). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
cup = mL × 0.004226752838
1 mL = 0.000001 m³ and 1 cup = 0.0002365882365 m³, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.004226752838 (rounded here; the page uses the full value). Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many US cups are in a milliliter?
1 milliliter = 0.004226752838 US cups. The factor is exact by definition but has endless decimals, so it is shown rounded; the page uses the full value.
How do I convert milliliters to US cups?
Multiply by 0.004226752838. For example, 100 mL × 0.004226752838 = 0.4226752838 cup.
What is 1,000 mL in US cups?
1,000 mL = 4.226752838 cup. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
