Liters and US quarts
The liter is exactly one cubic decimeter, or 1/1000 of a cubic meter. Drinks, fuel, engine displacement and household liquids are sold by the liter in most countries.
The US liquid quart is a quarter of a US gallon: exactly 0.946352946 liters, or 2 pints. Motor oil, milk, stock and ice cream are sold in quarts in the US.
Worked example
Convert 2 L: 2 × 1.056688209 = 2.113376419, so 2 liters is 2.113376419 US quarts. Likewise 5 L = 5.283441047 qt.
Estimating in your head
Multiply by 1.1 for a quick figure; it is off by about 4.1%. For 2 L that gives 2.2 qt, against 2.11338 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert US quarts to liters, divide by 1.056688209 (or multiply by 0.946352946). The swap button between the boxes opens that page.
How this works
qt = L × 1.056688209
1 L = 0.001 m³ and 1 qt = 0.000946352946 m³, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 1.056688209 (rounded here; the page uses the full value). Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many US quarts are in a liter?
1 liter = 1.056688209 US quarts. The factor is exact by definition but has endless decimals, so it is shown rounded; the page uses the full value.
How do I convert liters to US quarts?
Multiply by 1.056688209. For example, 5 L × 1.056688209 = 5.283441047 qt.
What is 10 L in US quarts?
10 L = 10.56688209 qt. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
