Megabits per second and megabytes per second
A megabit per second (Mbps) is 1,000,000 bits per second. Home internet plans, Wi-Fi speeds and video streaming requirements are given in Mbps.
A megabyte per second is 1,000,000 bytes, or 8 megabits, per second. Browsers, game launchers and file copy dialogs show transfer speed in MB/s.
Worked example
Convert 500 Mbit/s: 500 × 0.125 = 62.5, so 500 megabits per second is 62.5 megabytes per second. Likewise 100 Mbit/s = 12.5 MB/s.
Estimating in your head
Divide by 8 for a quick figure; it is off by about 0%. For 500 Mbit/s that gives 62.5 MB/s, against 62.5 exactly.
Going the other way
To convert megabytes per second to megabits per second, divide by 0.125 (or multiply by 8).
How this works
MB/s = Mbit/s × 0.125
1 Mbit/s = 125,000 B/s and 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 B/s, both by definition, so the factor is their ratio: 0.125 exactly. Results drop binary floating-point noise beyond 15 significant digits and display at the precision you choose (6 significant figures by default). Copy result copies the full value.
Frequently asked
How many megabytes per second are in a megabit per second?
1 megabit per second = 0.125 megabytes per second, exactly. The value follows from the unit definitions, so it never changes.
How do I convert megabits per second to megabytes per second?
Multiply by 0.125. For example, 100 Mbit/s × 0.125 = 12.5 MB/s.
What is 1,000 Mbit/s in megabytes per second?
1,000 Mbit/s = 125 MB/s. The table next to the converter lists more common values.
Is the result rounded?
Only on screen. The page computes with the exact definitions and removes floating-point noise past 15 significant digits; pick 3 to 12 significant figures, or use Copy result for the full value.
