Storage sizes come in two systems that share similar names. Drive makers, network speeds and the SI use decimal prefixes: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Many operating systems and memory specs count in powers of two: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, which Windows labels "GB". The IEC introduced KiB, MiB and GiB in 1998 so the two could be told apart. This is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows.

This converter treats kB, MB, GB and TB as decimal and KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB as binary. The most searched pairs have their own pages with worked examples, listed above.
