Markdown in one minute
Markdown is plain text with light punctuation for formatting: # for headings, *italic* and **bold**, - for lists, [text](url) for links, backticks for code. It is the writing format of GitHub, GitLab, Reddit, Notion exports, static-site generators and countless CMSs. Sooner or later you need the HTML: to paste into a template, an email builder or a field that only accepts HTML.
This converter follows CommonMark, the standard specification, plus the GitHub Flavored Markdown extensions people expect: tables with |, ~~strikethrough~~, task lists - [x] and automatic links.
Worked example
## Release notes
- **New:** dark mode
- ~~Old export~~ removed
becomes <h2>Release notes</h2> followed by a <ul> with two <li> items, the first containing <strong>New:</strong> and the second <del>Old export</del>.
Line breaks
In standard Markdown a single line break inside a paragraph is just a space. Turn on line breaks to get <br> for each newline, as in GitHub comments and chat apps.
How this works
The page parses your Markdown with the marked library configured for CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, then outputs the generated HTML as source code you can copy. Raw HTML inside the Markdown is passed through as both specifications allow, so the output is not sanitised: if the Markdown comes from someone else, clean it with an HTML sanitiser before publishing. The line-break option switches single newlines from spaces to <br>. Everything runs in this tab.
Frequently asked
Is the HTML safe to put on my site?
Only if you trust the Markdown. Raw HTML passes through, so sanitise untrusted input.
Does it support tables?
Yes, GitHub-style tables with pipes and a separator row, plus strikethrough and task lists.
Why are my line breaks ignored?
Standard Markdown joins lines in a paragraph. Turn on Line breaks, or end a line with two spaces.
Can I see a rendered preview?
This page shows the HTML source. Paste it into a page or email builder to see it rendered.
