Why HEIC photos need converting

iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image File Format) by default. HEIC keeps the same quality as JPEG at roughly half the size, but many places still can't open it: most Windows apps without an extra codec, older Android phones, many websites' upload forms and some print services. JPG is the most widely accepted photo format: every website, email client, printer and older Windows or Android device opens it.

What you get

The photo is decoded at full resolution with its orientation applied, then saved as JPG. Metadata is removed from the result, including the GPS location your phone records, so the file is safe to share. Colours are kept as stored: photos taken in the wide Display P3 gamut are saved without a colour profile, so the most saturated colours can look slightly duller.

How it works here

The photo is decoded in your browser with libheif (compiled to WebAssembly) and encoded again on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so there's no account and no daily limit.

How this works

The HEIC image is decoded in a Web Worker with libheif (HEVC through libde265, compiled to WebAssembly) at full size, with the stored rotation and mirroring applied, then drawn to a canvas and encoded by the browser as JPG at quality 92, with transparent areas on white. Only pixels are written, so every piece of metadata is dropped. Images over 100 megapixels are refused before decoding. HEIC files with several images (bursts, Live Photo stills) give the primary image.

Frequently asked

Is the location removed?

Yes. All metadata, including GPS coordinates, camera model and capture time, is dropped from the converted file.

Does it lose quality?

JPG is lossy, but at quality 92 the difference from the original isn't visible in normal use.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It's converted in your browser and never leaves your device.

Can I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC?

Yes: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPEG. Existing photos stay HEIC.
