Converting salary to hourly
A full-time job in the US is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks: 2,080 hours a year. Divide an annual salary by 2,080 to get the hourly rate, or multiply an hourly wage by 2,080 for the annual equivalent. A quick rule: an hourly wage times 2, with three zeros added, is roughly the annual salary ($25 an hour ≈ $50,000 a year; exactly $52,000).
Worked example
A $60,000 salary is:
- $28.85 an hour
- $230.77 a day (5-day week)
- $1,153.85 a week
- $2,307.69 every two weeks (26 paychecks)
- $2,500 twice a month (24 paychecks)
- $5,000 a month
Biweekly vs semimonthly
Biweekly pay comes every other Friday, 26 times a year, so two months a year have three paychecks. Semimonthly pay comes on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day, 24 times a year, with slightly larger checks.
Hourly vs salaried
Hourly, non-exempt workers are owed overtime at 1.5× for hours over 40 a week under the Fair Labor Standards Act, so their real annual pay can be higher. These are gross figures before tax.
How this works
The page converts your pay to an annual amount using how many of that period fit in a year: hours per week × weeks for hourly pay, days per week × weeks for daily pay, weeks per year for weekly, half that for biweekly, 24 for semimonthly and 12 for monthly. Every other period is the annual amount divided by its count. Change the weeks per year to account for unpaid time off.
