How much to tip

In the United States, a tip of 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary at sit-down restaurants, with 20% now common for good service. Bartenders often get $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab; delivery drivers, hairdressers and taxi drivers are typically tipped 15–20% too. Counter service and tip jars are optional.

Worked example

A dinner bill of $86.40 with an 18% tip: 86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55 in tip, for a total of $101.95. Split between three people, each pays $33.98, including $5.18 of tip.

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal one place left ($8.64).
  • 20%: double the 10% ($17.28).
  • 15%: 10% plus half of it ($12.96).

Outside the US

Tipping customs vary: many European restaurants include service, and in Brazil a 10% service charge is usually printed on the bill and is optional by law.

How this works

The tip is the bill times the percentage divided by 100. The total adds the tip to the bill, and the per-person amount divides the total by the number of people. Results are rounded to the cent, so individual shares can differ from the total by a cent. Everything runs in your browser.
